A longboard or longskate is similar to a skateboard but with longer dimensions and with trucks and wheels designed for smooth and fast rolling. The longboard was initially conceived as an alternative to surfing to continue "surfing" when there were no waves in the sea. Since then, it has been evolving specializing in various disciplines such as Downhill, Dancing or Freeride. Each of these modalities uses a characteristic type of longboard that differs mainly in the shape of the table, types of trucks and wheels.
Today we have many Longboard brands with a wide price range. Some brands even have their own sub-brands in order to offer products for all budgets. The most prominent brands are Loaded, Long Island, Rayne, Landyacht, Arbor, Globe, Hydrophonic, Miller, Omen, Z-Flex, among many others.
There are many types of longboards, each one designed for a specific use. If you are a beginner, we recommend that you start with a cruising longboard. This type of longboard is mainly designed to ride without looking for limits and is the easiest to use. Later, depending on whether you want something more designed for descents (downhill), for dancing (dancing) or for skidding (freeride / freestyle), you can choose a higher-end longboard to get the most out of it.
That doesn't mean you start with a low-quality longboard. Having a good wood that flexes well, good trucks that turn correctly or wheels that turn at a good speed, is essential to fully enjoy longboarding no matter how little experience you have.
Longboard and skateboard share a similar structure as they both have a wooden board, trucks and wheels. However, its design and use is totally different. In a longboard we look for speed, stability and the ability to perform controlled turns and skids. With skateboarding, we seek above all to perform tricks in skate parks or urban obstacles. For this reason, skateboard decks are shorter with double kicktails, short trucks, and small, hard wheels.
There are several types of longboard or longskate. On the one hand, there are the cruisers that are mainly used to ride around the city or for walks. We also have freeride or freestyle longboards, which are the ones used to do a bit of everything: skidding, rolling, descending, etc. For deeper descents, Downhill longboards are used. Finally, to do dance tricks with the longboard, those from Dancing are used. From here, there are endless board shapes, hardnesses, truck and wheel sizes, etc. that will make the longboard behave in a different way.
There are several ways to brake on a longboard. The simplest is to place the sole of one foot on the ground. In these cases, it is advisable to have slippers with a resistant sole. The most experienced skaters can stop skidding by making a quick movement by turning the longboard suddenly.
We always recommend taking classes to reduce learning time and avoid scares. If we do not have a longboard school in our area, the solution is to go to a very smooth area and look for videos on YouTube that explain how to start. Oh, and not least, always use protection.
